Free Phone Project to benefit low-income folk, vets, seniors

People without cellphones will be able to pick up free ones this weekend as part of the "Free Phone Project."

The project seeks to give cellphones to low-income individuals, veterans and senior citizens. About 500 cellphones will be given away from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

They can be picked up at the MGM Resorts International Culinary Academy of Las Vegas Events Center, 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd., North Las Vegas.

The cellphones will include free monthly minutes and texts. They are available to those who qualify for telephone "lifeline programs," which include qualifications that mirror federal low-income programs such as Section 8, SSI or SNAP.

The event will be hosted by singer B. Taylor and actress Yvette Yates.
