Henderson council creates bicycle advisory committee

The Henderson City Council has created a bicycle advisory committee to promote bicycling as a mode of commuter and recreational transportation .

"We're trying to become the first community in Southern Nevada that has the 'bicycle friendly community' designation from the League of American Bicyclists," said City Manager Jacob Snow, who came up with the idea to form the committee.

The league provides incentives, hands-on assistance and award recognition for communities that actively support bicycling.

"We're just trying to make sure that we're doing what we need to make bicycling a more viable form of transportation," Snow said.

Henderson has more than 66 miles of bike trails, and more than 150 miles of bike lanes.

The City Council appointed the following bicycle advisory committee members Tuesday: Dick Wimmer, a bicycle enthusiast who retired in January 2010 from his position as deputy general manager in charge of administration at the Southern Nevada Water Authority and Las Vegas Valley Water District; Paul Schmitt, division vice president at The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company's Las Vegas office; Ron Floth, bicycle and community outreach coordinator for the Regional Transportation Commission; Dawn Nielson, a triathlete; Steve Raucher, president of Proforma GPS Global Promotional Sourcing; and Scott Seegmiller of WestCorp Management Group.
