Inmate dead after apparent suicide at North Las Vegas Detention Center

A 56-year-old man was discovered dead after an apparent suicide Sunday inside the North Las Vegas Detention Center, police said.

The name of the man was not released.

North Las Vegas police said corrections officers discovered the man dead inside his one-inmate cell at 7:20 a.m.. He was jailed after a recent arrest on a misdemeanor charge. Police said they think he committed suicide between 6:30 a.m. and the time his body was found.

Details of how the inmate might have killed himself were not released.

It was the second time in recent days that an inmate was found dead at a jail in the Las Vegas Valley.

On Friday, a 29-year-old inmate at the Clark County Detention Center was fatally stabbed by his cellmate. Authorities said Francesco Sanfilippo, 29, died after he was stabbed by 18-year-old Carl Marcus Guilford.

Sanfilippo was facing 13 counts of possessing child pornography and had a pending drunken driving case. Guilford was facing a murder charge, accused of suffocating his 6-year-old cousin with a comforter in May.

Following Sanfilippo's death, Las Vegas police are reviewing procedures that allowed them to house Guilford with Sanfilippo.
