Las Vegas man pleads guilty in federal probe of phony tax returns

A Las Vegas man pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in a scheme to submit false federal tax returns in 2009 using false home buyer credits, the Justice Department announced.

Damon Boswell, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and is to be sentenced Sept. 15.

From April 2009 to May 2009, Boswell and another defendant, Cheryl Ramos, conspired to defraud the United States by filing federal tax returns that falsely claimed refunds for people based on the first-time home buyers credit, according to prosecutors.

Ramos pleaded guilty last year, and is waiting to be sentenced.

Boswell used personal information from people, including dates of birth and Social Security numbers, to file federal returns for tax year 2008 claiming phony refunds, prosecutors alleged.

The people did not authorize Boswell or anyone else to file the tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service in their names.

IRS-Criminal Investigation in Las Vegas put together the case, which was prosecuted jointly by the Nevada U.S. attorney’s office and the Justice Department’s Tax Division in Washington.
