Man charged in 2014 home invasion indicted for murder

A man already facing dozens of charges in connection with breaking into a woman’s home, taking her family hostage and trying to rape the woman has been indicted on a murder charge, prosecutors said Friday.

Sean P. Cordeiro, 33, is awaiting trial on 49 counts, including first-degree kidnapping, burglary, open or gross lewdness, robbery with use of a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, grand larceny auto, child abuse, neglect or endangerment, and attempted sexual assault. He is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.

Those charges stem from an incident that occurred less than three weeks after Christopher Matley was killed on Feb. 7, 2014. Cordeiro was charged with one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon in Matley’s death, according to a criminal complaint.

Matley, 33, was found dead of multiple stab wounds on Feb. 9, 2014, according to police.

Later that month, on Feb. 27, prosecutors say Cordeiro kicked in the door of a home on Millhopper Avenue, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Buffalo Drive, in the early morning hours after watching the woman’s husband leave the home.

The woman told detectives that Cordeiro forced her onto a couch, fondled her and unbuckled his pants, according to a police report.

The woman was able to break away and hide with her children before the family was rescued by officers using a ladder to reach a second-story window.

Cordeiro was arrested shortly afterward. He told police he was high on methamphetamine and had hoped police would kill him. He told police he had recently served a 12-year prison sentence.

Police believe he might also be responsible for a Feb. 1, 2014 home invasion on Grace Street in the southeast valley. In that instance, a man kicked in the door of a woman’s home and held her captive while he stole things from her home, including a gun and a van, police said.

Cordeiro has a lengthy criminal history, including a robbery conviction in 2006 for which he was sentenced to 12 to 30 months in prison. He also has a drug possession case from 2013 and a reckless driving case from 2014.
