Man wounded in Fashion Show shooting
Las Vegas police said a fight at the food court in the Fashion Show mall escalated into a shooting on Tuesday.
One man was shot in the side of the neck about 6 p.m., Metro supervisor Lt. Mark Reddon said. The wounded man ran down an escalator and onto Las Vegas Boulevard, then later walked into MountainView Hospital.
Police weren’t sure how he got to MountainView. He then was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. As of 9:30 p.m., he was in stable condition with nonlife-threatening injuries.
The wounded man has a history of gang involvement, Reddon said, adding he was not cooperating with investigators.
Two men suspected of being involved in the shooting fled in a blue Dodge, but Fashion Show valet attendants recognized them and notified police, who found the car and detained the men.
It was determined that the two men, described by Reddon as friends of the wounded man, were involved in the altercation but were not suspects in the actual shooting.
Police have little information so far on the shooter.
People resumed shopping at stores outside the locked-down area of the mall an hour after the shooting, though mall security was shooing people away from an outside entrance to a plaza that leads to Las Vegas Boulevard. A section of less than 20 stores in the mall was locked down following the shooting and mall security encouraged other nearby stores to remain open.
Las Vegas-based artist David Fleming said he was 40 feet away and that his heart raced after he heard a loud shot and saw hundreds of people running toward him.
“One gunshot echoed through the whole walkway,” said Dan, an employee at Boot Star who didn’t want to give his last name. “It was loud. You could probably hear it at the other end of the mall.”
Multiple employees from Forever 21 said they did not hear the gunshot, but they heard people screaming.
The 2-million-square-foot Fashion Show mall, on the Strip near Spring Mountain, is known for high-end and boutique shopping.
