Metro invites Las Vegas Valley to ‘Sea of Blue’ rally

Metro has invited the Las Vegas Valley to rally in support of police Friday night.

Off-duty law enforcement officers and others are organizing the “Sea of Blue” support rally at the Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way, near the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive. It starts at 6 p.m.

About 800 people are expected to attend, police said Thursday. Attendees are asked to wear blue.

“Sea of Blue” events backing first responders have popped up in cities across the U.S. following protests against law enforcement and after violence against police. Those protests and attacks followed police killings in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City.

Groups including Women of Metro and the Police Unity Tour are putting together the Clark County event, Metro said. Public officials including Las Vegas Mayor Carol Goodman and County Commissioner Larry Brown are scheduled to speak.

The “peaceful, upbeat” event will feature the multi-agency Honor Guard and the Emerald Society Bagpipes. There will be live music and food trucks.

Parking space is limited at the park, Metro said. Additional parking is available on Metro Academy Way and Isaac Newton Street and at the Challenger School parking lot.
