Metro’s “Fight to Take Back the City” event set for Saturday

Las Vegas police have announced a pep rally against crime scheduled for Saturday at Cashman Field.

The inaugural “Fight to Take Back the City” event, designed to “empower people to stand up and fight for their community,” is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Metro said in a news release.

Police planned the event, they said, in response to an in increase in violent crimes, specificially citing homicide statistics. The release said there were 128 homicides in 2014 in Metro’s jurisdiction. In comparison, there were 115 homicides in 2013 and 84 in 2012.

“Sadly many of these crimes could have been prevented if more citizens would have spoken up or been involved with their neighborhoods,” the release said.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Sherrif Lombardo will speak during the event at 12 p.m., the release said.

The free event will also feature entertainment from local headliners, like The Jersey Boys, a kid’s corner with bounce house and vehicles, personnel from Metro.
