Orthopedic surgeon to UNLV athletes dies

The orthopedic surgeon and doctor, who served UNLV’s entire athletics department for four decades, died on Sunday.

Dr. Gerald Higgins, who would have been 80 years old in September, has been inducted into both the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame and the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.

A funeral mass will be held for Higgins at Our Lady of Las Vegas Roman Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Three Angry Wives Pub, 8820 Charleston Blvd., starting at 6 p.m. for an Irish wake.
