Pedestrian in critical condition after being hit by car in east valley

A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday after being hit by a car near Fremont Street and Eastern Avenue.

The 2002 four-door Toyota Camry involved in the 2:45 p.m. incident left the scene, but was stopped shortly afterward, according to Metro Lt. Jeff Goodwin of the Las Vegas police. The driver, Jesus Paez-Rivas, 31, of Las Vegas, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run.

Original reports indicated that the pedestrian, Keith Bridgewater, did not have life-threatening injuries, but the 29-year-old Las Vegas resident "took a turn for the worse"and was undergoing emergency surgery with life-threatening injuries at UMC, Goodwin said.

The collision occurred at collision in the south parking lot of an AM/PM convenience store at 2320 E. Fremont St.

Witness statements and evidence at the scene indicate a 2002 Toyota Camry was stopped in the east portion of the parking lot when a man approached the vehicle on the passenger side, according to a Las Vegas police news release from The vehicle accelerated toward the fuel pumps while the pedestrian clung to the passenger side of the vehicle, the release said. The front of the Toyota Camry crashed into a yellow barrier post and the pedestrian was forced to the ground, before the car left the scene, according to the release.

The crash is under investigation.
