“Pill Take Back” set for Saturday at Arbor View High School

Southern Nevadans looking for a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs have an opportunity Saturday at Arbor View High School, 7500 Whispering Sands Dr. in Las Vegas.

From 8 a.m. until noon, Clark County School District police personnel are putting on “Pill Take Back Day,” offering not just safe disposal of the medicatons, but to reduce the chances of the drugs falling into the hands of children.

The event is being put on in conjunction with the Care Coalition, a group that works to increase public awareness of the effects of drug and alcohol abuse by educating and supporting youth, adults, the community and drug prevention agencies in Clark County.

“Throughout the nation and locally, we are seeing more children who are abusing prescription drugs, most of which are coming directly from their parents’ medicine cabinets,” school district police officer Robert Mayer said.

Document shredding also will take place, but the primary focus is to collect expired or unused prescriptions.

Last year, school district police collected more than 1,400 pounds of medications during similar events. The collection at Arbor View High will be the first time the department has had the event in the far northwest part of the valley.
