Residents not injured, but beagle dies in house fire

An accidental fire at a west valley home Wednesday afternoon caused $250,000 in damage, the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

No people were injured in the blaze, but a 4-year-old beagle died from smoke inhalation and a pet cat was missing Wednesday night.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 2:36 p.m. at 9424 Salt Water Court, near Fort Apache and Desert Inn roads.

The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes. Investigators determined it began in an exhaust fan in the ceiling of the laundry room. The flames burned for a while in the void area between the first and second floors, and then spread through an air vent in an atrium at the front of the house that was open to all rooms.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire.
