Tarkanian released from Las Vegas hospital

Former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian is back home after spending 10 days in a Las Vegas hospital following a heart attack.

Danny Tarkanian said his 83-year-old father was “very tired” but “smiling” after being released Saturday from Valley Hospital Medical Center.

The elder Tarkanian was hospitalized April 9 after attending the Final Four in North Texas, and complaining of weakness, lethargy and labored breathing. Doctors determined he had a heart attack.

Danny Tarkanian said that while it was at least his father’s second heart attack, family members are relieved that tests showed it didn’t cause his heart condition to be “significantly worse.”

He said his father was cheered by an outpouring of support from former players and friends during his hospitalization, including a phone call from Kentucky coach John Calipari several days ago.

A member of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, Tarkanian led three schools to the NCAA tournament, including the 1990 UNLV team that won a national title.
