Vigil to recognize homeless who died this year

Seventy-two homeless people who died this year will be memorialized during a vigil Thursday afternoon.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the HELP of Southern Nevada campus, 1640 E. Flamingo Road.

Linda Lera-Randle El, director of the Straight from the Streets homeless outreach program, has organized the public vigil each December since 1996.

The names, compiled by the Clark County coroner's office, will be read aloud.

Also to be paid tribute is Shannon West Redwine, 45, former regional homeless coordinator for Southern Nevada, who died Nov. 30 after a long battle with breast cancer. She's the namesake for HELP of Southern Nevada's homeless youth shelter at Foremaster Lane and Las Vegas Boulevard.
