Nevadan gets 25 years as habitual criminal

A 32-year-old Gardnerville man convicted of drug trafficking has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison after a judge found him to be a habitual criminal.

Douglas County District Judge Tod Young told David Gomez Tuesday he must serve at least nine years before he’s eligible for parole.

Gomez pleaded guilty earlier to trafficking and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He has been imprisoned prison twice before on drug and other charges.

The Record-Courier reported that Gomez told Young he’s been a drug addict, dealer and “thug” but he’s spent the last seven months in isolation with a Bible and believes he’s on the road to recovery.

The judge told Gomez he can’t rely on God to change him, he has to do that himself.
