Sparks zoning change regulates medical marijuana

SPARKS — The Sparks City Council has taken another step toward regulating the legal sale of medical marijuana within the city limits.

The council approved an amendment to the city zoning ordinance on Monday that allows for regulation of pot cultivation facilities, independent testing laboratories and facilities for the production of edible marijuana-infused products.

The city said the activities will be allowed only in areas zoned industrial.

The council plans to consider an amendment to the same zoning code next month to allow for the regulation of medical pot dispensaries.

State law bans the establishments within 1,000 feet of schools and within 300 feet of community facilities, including playgrounds, parks and churches.
