A 2-year-old boy drowned Monday in a residential backyard pool, the second toddler in a week to die that way, North Las Vegas police said.
Police spokeswoman Chrissie Coon said the boy was transported to North Vista Hospital where he died Monday evening. Police did not release the name of the toddler.
Several relatives were at the home on the 3100 block of Van Der Meer Street, near Cheyenne Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard North, when the incident happened, Coon said. Police were told that the boy fell in.
Coon said police responded to the incident about 3:15 p.m.
Coon would not say whether the pool was fenced or gated. Aerial footage of the pool shot by local media didn’t show a fence.
Coon said no one was arrested Monday in connection with the drowning.
On Tuesday, an 18-month-old boy drowned in a backyard pool at a residential day care in North Las Vegas. The Clark County coroner’s office determined that drowning was an accident.
North Las Vegas police continue to investigate that incident and will submit their findings to the Clark County district attorney’s office.
Coon said the two drownings have been tough on the officers who were first responders. Officers who arrived at the home Monday performed CPR on the 2-year-old boy.
Coon also said the recent drownings should heighten awareness of pool safety for parents and those taking care of young children.
“You’re talking about 18 months to 2 years, a time when children just learn to crawl or walk, and they’re curious,” Coon said. “It’s a critical time to watch children around the pool and both these incidents prove that.”
