9/11 T-shirts find common purpose
Days after the 9/11 attacks, a spontaneous memorial at the base of the Statue of Liberty outside New York-New York grew into a collection of mementos, including 5,422 T-shirts from firefighting companies around the world.
A new 31-foot-high structure made out of 2,000 of those T-shirts in the shape of a DNA strand was unveiled Friday at UNLV's Lied Library.
Titled "Common Threads" and created by UNLV alumnus Troy Gillett, the temporary display was the product of a 2002 partnership between New York-New York and UNLV Special Collections.
A plaque was placed at the tribute site in 2003.
