Arizona official calls for end to nuclear dump payments

A member of the Arizona Corporation Commission is asking the U.S. Energy secretary to end a requirement that customers of Arizona Public Service Co. and Salt River Project pay a fee into a nuclear waste repository fund.

In his letter, Commissioner Bob Stump said he wants the requirement to end because the Obama Administration has rejected Nevada's Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste stockpile site.

Stump urged Energy Secretary Steven Chu to grant relief to Arizona's rate payers, who Stumps says have already paid $258 million to the nuclear waste repository fund.
