Assembly completes overrides of three Gibbons tax, spending vetoes

CARSON CITY — The Assembly voted to override Gov. Jim Gibbons’ vetoes of three tax and spending bills this morning, completing the action begun by the state Senate Thursday night.

In overriding Gibbons’ veto of bills containing tax increases, state workers’ pay and spending authorizations, the Assembly ensured passage of those bills despite the governor’s objection.

The Assembly also voted to override gubernatorial vetoes of five other revenue bills that will now go to the Senate for action.

The vote on the override for the $781 million package of tax increases, Senate Bill 429, was the same as the original vote for its passage last week, 29-13. All 28 Democrats and Republican John Carpenter of Elko voted for it.

On Senate Bill 431, authorizing state spending for the next two years, the vote was 37-5 to override the veto.

On Senate Bill 433, funding salaries and forcing some state employees to take 12 unpaid furlough days per year, the override vote was 38-4.
