Christmas trees being repurposed as mulch for public parks, gardens

Christmas trees are being recycled into mulch as part of an annual valleywide program designed to reduce holiday landfill waste and create mulch for use at public parks and gardens.

Donations will be accepted through Jan. 15 at more than 20 drop-off spots throughout Las Vegas.

The program is sponsored by a variety of public agencies, businesses and organizations, including the Las Vegas Water District, the cities of Henderson and North Las Vegas, Clark County and the Nevada Division of Forestry, among others.

Lights, ornaments, wires, tinsel and nails must be removed from the trees. They can damage the mulcher. Also, flocked trees cannot be recycled.

For more information, contact the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, 702-822-7705.
