Clark County GOP to have convention on March 8

The Clark County Republican Party on Monday announced that its convention will be held March 8 at the Orleans.

At the county convention, delegates elected in the Jan. 19 precinct caucuses will elect delegates to the state GOP convention in April. Republicans in Nevada's other 16 counties are holding their conventions on various dates.

The county GOP is currently working to contact people who were elected delegates and alternates at their caucuses.

So far, it appears that, of 6,003 delegate and 6,003 alternate positions up for election in Clark County on Jan. 19, 4,066 delegates and 1,453 alternates were elected. Delegate slots go unfilled if no one is present or runs for the position.

More than 44,000 Republicans attended the caucuses and more than half voted for Mitt Romney in a presidential straw poll held after the precinct delegate elections.

All the delegates are unpledged. Because Romney has quit the race and John McCain looks almost certain to win the nomination, it's not clear if there will be much presidential excitement at the county convention.

The Clark County Democratic Convention is scheduled for Feb. 23 at Bally's. Democratic delegates were elected based on their presidential preferences.
