Clark County School Board approves assumption of budget cuts

In a 5-1 vote, Clark County School Board members tonight approved the assumption that $120 million in budget cuts will be needed next school year because of worsening economic conditions and expected shortfalls in state funding. That means that cuts, such as severe reductions in district staff totaling 1,000 positions, will have to be addressed in the 2009-10 budget. The jobs that will likely be eliminated include administrative, teaching and support staff positions. Board Member Larry Mason voted against the assumption on principle, saying education has been cut enough. Board Member Shirley Barber was absent. A final budget for the next school year will be approved in May.
