Driver killed in crash after leaving accident scene

A suspect in a minor hit-and-run accident Monday night died after his vehicle rolled in a parking lot shortly after leaving the scene, Las Vegas police said.

Police said the unidentified 48-year-old man was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo about 11:50 p.m. through a parking lot at 5975 Spencer St., just east of McCarran International Airport and south of Russell Road, at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle hit an embankment, rolled and struck a light pole, police said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle had been involved in a hit-and-run accident near Desert Inn Road and Boulder Highway earlier that night, police said. That incident was reported at 11:43 p.m. and was about seven miles from the scene of the fatal, single-vehicle accident.

It's unclear whether the driver was being pursued by police or another driver when the vehicle rolled.

The Clark County coroner's office will release the driver's name and cause and manner of his death.
