Findlay show helps victims of local fires

The sixth annual Frank's Father's Day Car Show June 16 at Findlay Chevrolet proved important for a pair of reasons.

First, the colorful event drew about 175 show cars.

However, even more important was the fact that the proceeds of $1,550 from the show will be used to help local victims of fires through the After the Fire Is Out program in Southern Nevada.

"We thought that this was the right thing to do," said Warren Whitney, president of the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation and a participant in the After the Fire Is Out program, which is part of the American Red Cross.

"There are so many traumatic things that go through a person's mind when there is a fire. Each family has specialized individual needs, so that's where we can really help."

As a 17-year veteran of the Clark County Fire Department who is also a captain, Whitney has seen his share of tragedy over the years.

"You know that it's not going to be easy when you leave the fire station en route to a call," said the 41-year-old Whitney, whose own house caught fire in 2007.

The Findlay Chevrolet car show was again a smashing success.

"I love classic cars," Whitney said. "What I admire about classic cars is not only the beauty of the cars, but the time and passion that is required to own one. Classic car owners express themselves through their show cars.

"I have been coming to the Findlay car show for the past three years. I have known (Findlay Chevrolet Sales Manager) Doug Fleming for more than 20 years."

"We had so many different events going on during the car show," Fleming said. "It's been a very good event because it helps build relationships and shows our community-oriented approach.

"In addition, there is a very interesting camaraderie among the owners of classic vehicles. They follow one another to different shows and ours is one of the most popular, and we're very proud to be a partner and supporter of the Southern Nevada Burn Foundation."
