Ground broken on police facility

The Henderson Police Department broke ground Monday morning for a new substation that will serve the northern end of the city.

Slated to open next summer, the North Community Police Station will serve as the new home for about 80 of the department's 391 officers. The station on Sunset Road east of Boulder Highway joins the two other police substations on Green Valley Parkway and in downtown Henderson.

"This station will give us another place where our police can work with our residents to make sure we maintain that sense of security that is so important to us," Mayor Jim Gibson said.

The station at 225 E. Sunset Road will serve residents in an area generally bordered by the Las Vegas Beltway to the south, Pecos Road to the west, Russell Road to the north, and Pabco Road to the east and will provide them "a closer connection with the officers," Police Chief Richard Perkins said.

The $16 million, 35,600-square-foot building will be the first certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design facility in the city by incorporating energy-efficient standards in its design, construction and operation.
