High Desert prisoner dies at Las Vegas hospital

An inmate housed at High Desert State Prison died at a Las Vegas hospital Wednesday.

John D. Jennings, 59, who had been serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for sexual assault and lewdness with a child under age 14, died at Valley Hospital Medical Center of a medical condition, according to a press release from the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Jennings was convicted in Washoe County and had been released from prison twice, most recently in 1999. He returned to custody in April 2013 for a parole violation, officials said.

An autopsy will be conducted.
