JAILED IN LAS VEGAS

Son arrested in 1999 killing of WWII veteran

Authorities say a man suspected of killing his father in California and cashing his veterans' checks for nearly a decade has been arrested in Las Vegas.

Mark Christian, 54, remained jailed Friday after being arrested Wednesday by U.S. marshals.

He's charged in San Bernardino County with killing 74-year-old James Christian. The body of the former World War II fighter pilot was found in an unmarked grave in the San Bernardino Mountains two years ago.

Sheriff's Detective Ryan Ford says Christian obtained more than $79,000 from his father's pension between 1999 and 2007. He pleaded guilty in Las Vegas to federal fraud charges and awaits sentencing. Ford says it's unclear when Christian will return to California to face the murder charge.

FRIDAY NIGHT INCIDENT

Police say man shot after brandishing knife

A man was shot and wounded by police after brandishing a knife in a mobile home park near Nellis Boulevard and East Gowan Road Friday night.

Las Vegas police Capt. Randy Montandon said police responded to a mobile home park at 3825 N. Nellis, next to Nellis Air Force Base, about 8 p.m. in response to a report of a man with a gun.

The officer approached a man who matched the description, and when he was 10 to 20 feet away the man produced a large type of Bowie knife, Montandon said.

The officer fired at the man several times, striking him at least once.

The man was taken to University Medical Center where he was in surgery late Friday night. His condition was unknown.

The names of the officer and wounded man were not released.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

18-year-old dies during group hike in Arizona

An 18-year-old who was among a group of eight hikers that had run out of water at the Grand Canyon has died.

The National Park Service says rafters on the river were flagged down by a hiking group Thursday morning about 30 miles downstream from Lees Ferry.

The hikers told the rafters that they were out of water and needed help.

Park Service rangers then received a report that one of the eight hikers was dead.

A paramedic flown to the scene found the group about halfway down a trail known as the Shinumo Wash Route. The dead 18-year-old was located about a mile from the rest of the party and his body was flown out by helicopter.

MAN ESCORTED OUT

Crowd protests vote at wildlife meeting

A raucous crowd erupted in protest at the Nevada Wildlife Commission meeting in Elko after commission members proceeded to elect officers without first hearing public comment.

Gerald Lent of Reno was re-elected chairman and Scott Raine of Eureka was elected vice chairman.

Tom Smith, with the Nevada Coalition for Wildlife, was escorted out of the meeting when he tried to protest the election. Sportsmen and conservation groups complained that Lent changed an earlier agenda that would have allowed public comment before elections were held.

As Smith was led out of the room, he asked anyone opposed to the vote to stand up in protest.

About three-quarters of the 60 people in attendance stood up.
