Names of two victims killed in crash released

Two Las Vegas residents who died after a collision this weekend at the U.S. Highway 95 interchange and the Las Vegas Beltway were identified Monday by the Clark County coroner's office as Jamil Kadar Hawkins and Kanisha Shanell Jones.

The accident occurred early Saturday morning according to the Nevada Highway Patrol, but no details were provided Monday.

The coroner's office said 32-year-old Hawkins and 27-year-old Jones died after the crash from blunt force trauma.

Witnesses tell police: Victim left at crash site

Charges are pending against an Arizona man who left his critically injured girlfriend at the scene of an accident in Bullhead City, Ariz., early Sunday.

Police spokeswoman Emily Montague said Sheena Marie Nancy Debevec, 22, was thrown from the 2004 Mazda she was riding in when it rolled on its top near the intersection of Highway 95 and Baseline Road about 6 a.m.

Debevec was pronounced dead at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas nearly eight hours after the accident.

Montague said witnesses told police that the victim's boyfriend, Benjamin Lee Bowers, 22, walked away from the accident scene.

Montague said Bowers was later taken from his home to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

CREWS TO BE ON HAND

Controlled burn set at valley wetlands

Dry brush near the Las Vegas Wash wetlands will be burned today and Wednesday.

Crews from local and state fire agencies will be on hand to monitor the blaze, which could produce a lot of smoke.

The burn of between five and eight acres of dry brush that started Monday is at the far end of Hollywood Boulevard toward Lake Las Vegas where crews have formed controlled burn piles.

The Clark County Fire Department, Nevada Division of Forestry, and the Las Vegas Valley Water District have teamed up for the project.

Two men killed in crash near lodge ID'd

Two Las Vegas men who died after a car accident on state Route 157 near Mount Charleston Lodge on Sunday were identified Monday by the Clark County coroner's office as Kenneth Leigh Hovey Jr. and Carl Backstrom.

The accident happened early Sunday morning according to the Nevada Highway Patrol, but no details were provided Monday.

The coroner's office said 34-year-old Hovey died from a broken neck and 35-year-old Backstrom died from blunt force trauma.
