Judge delays trial for suspect in child’s death
The trial of a day care worker charged in the 1997 death of a young girl was postponed Tuesday in District Court.
District Judge Michelle Leavitt postponed the trial of Alica Wegner because one of the defense attorneys had a family emergency.
Leavitt dismissed the jury, which was chosen last week.
The trial, which was set to begin this week, was expected to last three to four weeks. No new date has been chosen.
Wegner, 44, is facing a retrial on murder charges. She is accused of killing 14-month-old Kierra Harrison, a girl who authorities said was injured in Wegner's care.
Wegner was convicted in 1998 of killing Kierra and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
The Nevada Supreme Court overturned that conviction in 2000 and granted Wegner a new trial because of improper jury instructions.
She is currently out on bail.
