Kingman man sent to prison for killing woman, 76

KINGMAN, Ariz. — A northwest Arizona man who beat, strangled and slit the throat of his mother’s 76-year-old friend has been given a 35-year prison term.

Michael Edwin Dobson, 51, of Kingman, was sentenced Friday by Mohave County Superior Court Judge Steve Conn.

Prosecutor Rod Albright said Dobson killed Ruby Caldwell in September 2011 simply to steal her vehicle.

A trial jury found Dobson guilty of second-degree murder and theft of means of transportation.

Family members found the victim on the floor of her Kingman home in the 3600 block of Bluebird Lane. Dobson was driving the victim’s vehicle when he was arrested on the same day the homicide was discovered.

Albright said Dobson was released from prison in California 2009 and that he served a previous prison term when convicted of attempted manslaughter and other charges for brutally assaulting a woman in the San Diego area in 1984.
