Las Vegas ski resort to celebrate closing day of season Sunday

The Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort will hold its season closing celebration Sunday with live music and events throughout the day.

For just $20, anyone can enjoy the festivities beginning at 9 a.m. with the “Little Air” competition for children under 12 years of age.

Live music by Tommy Rocker and the annual Pond Skim event will begin at 1 p.m. The resort built a pond for the competition, and participants will see who can drop down and skim across it the farthest.

The resort is also saying goodbye to a 32-year-old double chairlift and offering lift tickets for $19.82 (the year it went into service). It is encouraging skiers and snowboarders to take the last run of the season together on the lift at 3:45 p.m.

Although the resort is seeing spring conditions, recent snowfall will allow for last-minute use of the facilities, resort staff said. On Saturday, 90 percent of the terrain was available to skiers and snowboarders.

Construction on a new, Doppelmayr quad chairlift will begin on Monday, and should be ready at the end of November. The new chairlift will increase the resort’s capability to take guests uphill from 900 people an hour to 2,000.

Because of the construction, the resort will not open for summer activities until July 4.
