Las Vegas Valley residents can still experience Perseid meteor shower

Las Vegas Valley residents can still experience the Perseid Meteor Shower, which peaked Friday morning, according to NASA.

They can take in views of strong meteor shower activity late Friday night through early Saturday morning, NASA reported on its website. The best times to catch the meteor shower are between 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday, College of Southern Nevada Planetarium Manager Andrew Kerr said.

The recent haze over the valley from wildfires will not affect the view as much as city lights will, Kerr said. City lights, however, will prevent you from seeing most of the meteors, according to Kerr. He recommends traveling northwest or southwest of the valley, to places such as Lake Mead National Recreation Area or Mount Charleston, to get the perfect view.

When watching the shower, it is best to lie on your back and look directly up into the sky.

To ensure the best experience, leave the binoculars at home, Kerr said. “They will limit your view.” Though the shower will be slower tonight, you can still see about one meteor per minute, he said.

The meteor shower this year is expected to be active through about Aug. 26, according to the American Meteor Society’s website.
