Man charged in death of girlfriend’s son

Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old man in the death of his girlfriend's 10-month-old son.

Las Vegas police on Sunday arrested Manuel Esquer-Anaya at the home he was sharing with the victim's mother in the 1400 block of Reno Avenue, near Tropicana Avenue and Maryland Parkway.

He is charged with one count of murder by child abuse and two counts of child abuse with substantial bodily harm in the death of Julian Rodriguez.

Police said Julian suffered bruising around his abdomen, but the Clark County coroner's office hadn't determined Tuesday how he died.

Lt. Brian Evans of the police abuse and neglect unit said the mother left Julian in Esquer-Anaya's care Sunday. About 8 p.m., she took Julian to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he died.

Julian's family didn't have any prior contact with the Department of Family Services.
