Man faces murder charge in death of 2-year-old

A 40-year-old Las Vegas Valley man was arrested on a murder charge after a 2-year-old child died after being in his care in August, police said Monday.

Victor Fakoya, who was arrested Friday, had sponsored the child and his family who had relocated from Nigeria in December 2007, Las Vegas police said. The child and his family were living at Fakoya's home.

On Aug. 8, the child -- a boy according to state records -- suffered injuries consistent with child abuse while in Fakoya's care, police said. The child died three days later at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Christine Skorupski, a spokeswoman with Clark County Family Services, said Fakoya and the child's immediate family had no prior history with her agency.

Fakoya remained in the Clark County Detention Center without bail Monday evening. He's expected to make his initial court appearance in Justice Court today.
