Man who died in shootout with NHP trooper Friday ID’d

The Clark County coroner on Sunday identified the man who died after a shootout with a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper early Friday morning.

The trooper pulled over a white Cadillac with two men and one woman inside on southbound Boulder Highway, south of U.S. Highway 95, just after midnight Friday. It’s unclear why the trooper pulled the Cadillac over.

Highway patrol spokeswoman Chelsea Stuenkel said the trooper spoke with the passengers after stopping the vehicle and was headed back to his car when Matthew Gibbon, 41, who was sitting in the back of the Cadillac, got out of the car and ran into a parking lot just north of Boulder Highway.

The shootout happened when the trooper ran after Gibbon, Stuenkel said. Gibbon shot at the trooper, and the trooper shot back.

The trooper was uninjured, although a bullet struck his badge, the highway patrol said. Gibbon was pronounced dead at the scene, Stuenkel said.

The Metropolitan Police Department will be investigating the incident’s officer-involved shooting aspect.
