Mining firm permit includes restrictions

VIRGINIA CITY -- Storey County commissioners have approved a mining company's request for a special use permit to expand its exploration drilling near Virginia City, but imposed more than 30 conditions.

Last week they voted to grant the permit to Comstock Mining Inc. to expand drilling in its largest target area, the Nevada Appeal reported.

The action doesn't allow for mining of ore, only exploration.

Many Virginia City-area residents strongly oppose the company's plan to resume silver and gold mining in the Comstock Historic District.

But a group of residents said it's satisfied the more than 30 conditions imposed on the company will ensure protections and improve oversight of the drilling.

Residents have voiced opposition to open-pit mining in the district that attracts tourists from around the world.
