REMEMBERING JANET COLLINS
Las Vegas acting coach Gerald Gordon gets prominent mention in a new book about Janet Collins, the first African-American prima ballerina to dance for New York's Metropolitian Opera Company.
Gordon, who coached Adrien Brody before his Oscar win for "The Pianist," was a dance student of Collins, who died in 2003. She would have been 95 March 2.
Gordon's memories contributed significantly to "Night Dancer: A Biography of Janet Collins," written by Yael Tamar Lewin. Gordon became a close friend despite their almost 20-year age difference.
Before joining the Met, Collins turned down the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where she was asked to paint her face white, recalled Gordon.
He moved to Las Vegas 15 years ago from Los Angeles, where he had a long tenure as artistic director of the Hollywood Centre Theatre.
A former producer and director, Gordon said he is interested in obtaining the rights to film Lewin's book.
"I had jokingly told Janet many times that one day I would make a film on her life," Gordon said. "She would laugh and ask me who I would get to dance her role."
