2 helicopter crash victims identified in Arizona

The charred remains of two Arizona men who were killed in a June 23 helicopter crash in western Arizona have been identified by the Mohave County medical examiner’s office.

The victims of the crash north of Alamo Lake, both pilots, were identified as David Scott Cormey, 55, Prescott Valley, and Timothy Shawn Brown, 52, Glendale.

A preliminary accident report posted Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board indicated the Robinson R66 helicopter departed from Prescott at 1:40 p.m., en route to Riverside, California, where one of the victims was to engage in a “check ride” with a Federal Aviation Administration inspector.

The flight was reported overdue late that night and the wreckage was found at 4:30 the next day, June 24. The safety board said the helicopter came to rest in hilly desert terrain.

“The debris field was about 750 yards long and 150 yards wide,” the preliminary report said. “The cabin came to rest inverted about 600 yards into the debris field, and was destroyed by a post crash fire.”

The report did not indicate which of the two pilots was operating the helicopter at the time of the crash. A specific cause of the crash has not been determined and an investigation continues.
