South Dakota principal wounded in school shooting; student in custody

The principal of a South Dakota high school was wounded by a gunshot on Wednesday and a student was taken into custody, according to officials and media reports.

The gunshot victim was in stable condition, Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman said.

Reuters was not immediately able to confirm local media reports that the injured person was the principal of Harrisburg High School south of Sioux Falls.

The shooter, a student, was subdued by staff and was taken into custody, Wollman said.

The school was placed on lockdown and the students were safe, officials and media said.

Authorities created a perimeter and searched the building after receiving a report of shots fired at the school at about 10 a.m., Lincoln County sheriff 911 director Todd Baldwin said.
