Warren Jeffs’ brother extradited in food stamp fraud scheme

ST. GEORGE, Utah — One of the polygamous leaders accused of organizing a multi-million dollar food stamp fraud scheme has been extradited from South Dakota.

Seth Jeffs, brother of well-known Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints leader Warren Jeffs, on Thursday was moved from South Dakota to Utah.

Seth Jeffs will be arraigned Monday in federal court in St. George on charges of conspiracy to commit Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Jeffs is one of 11 people indicted in the case. Authorities say the polygamous sect on the Utah-Arizona border diverted at least $12 million worth of federal benefits and that Jeffs ordered food stamp recipients to buy items to put in the church’s storehouse.
