Worker dies in fall from 53rd story of skyscraper onto passing car in downtown LA

LOS ANGELES — Authorities say a construction worker has fallen 53 stories to his death from a skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles.

Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart says the man plunged from the unfinished Wilshire Grand Tower on South Figueroa Street Thursday and hit the back of a passing car.

“It sounded like a bag of cement fell off the edge of the building,” Los Angeles Time photographer Mel Melcon told KTLA. Melcon was on assignment on the tower’s 71st floor when he heard the noise, the station reports.

Authorities said it is unknown what caused the man to fall from the 1,100-foot skyscraper.

Stewart says the driver didn’t appear to be injured but she was taken to a hospital for examination.

Review-Journal’s Kristen DeSilva contributed to this report.
