Neighbors pull critically injured man from burning apartment

Neighbors rescued a man from his burning apartment building near Charleston and Las Vegas boulevards Wednesday morning.

Las Vegas fire fighters responded to the Veteran’s Village Apartments about 9 a.m. and saw heavy flames coming from an upstairs apartment, according to Tim Szymanski of the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Neighbors heard the smoke alarms going off, and found the man laying next to a bed that was on fire when they entered his apartment, Szymanski said.

The neighbors pulled the man downstairs when firefighters arrived, and the blaze was extinguished in five minutes. The man was transported to the hospital with critical burns to his legs.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was due to careless smoking. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
