Nevada’s population grew by less than 1 percent in last fiscal year

CARSON CITY — State Demographer Jeff Hardcastle said today that Nevada’s population grew by less than 1 percent during the fiscal year that ended June 30.

He said just 20,396 people were added to the state population during the year, for an increase of 0.8 percent. That compares with increases of 3.6 percent in the 2006-07 fiscal year and 4.1 percent in 2005-06.

“While we are currently in what many are describing as uncharted economic waters, Nevada still managed to grow, though marginally over this past fiscal year,” Hardcastle said.

His report comes just a few weeks after the U.S. Census Bureau reported that Nevada now is just the eighth fastest-growing state in the union. Nevada had been the fastest or second fastest-growing state for more than 20 years.

As of July 1, Nevada had 2,738,733 residents, of which 1,967,716, or 71.8 percent lived in Clark County. Washoe County had 616,365 residents. That meant 87.2 percent of the state population lived in the two largest counties, leaving just 12.8 percent in the 15 largely rural counties.
