North Las Vegas adopts budget almost $25 million less than this year’s

North Las Vegas today adopted an $816.9 million budget for fiscal year 2009-2010, which is nearly $25 million less than this year’s adopted budget.

The City Council, minus Mayor Mike Montandon, who was absent, voted unanimously for the budget after a grim public hearing during which City Manager Gregory Rose promised even tougher economic times to come.

General fund expenditures in the budget add up to $202 million, 60 percent of which is for public safety. The figure was about $31 million less than the city had planned and $21 million less than this year’s adopted general fund budget.

Declining revenues during the recession forced the city to trim planned expenditures.

The city also postponed several planned projects and eliminated 67 vacant positions.

The budget is contingent on coming to cost-cutting agreements with the Teamsters union.
