NSHE regent won’t seek second term

Kevin Melcher, who has served as a Nevada System of Higher Education regent since 2010, says he won't seek re-election when his first term ends next year.

The 36-year Elko resident represents the system's 8th District — a vast, sparsely populated area encompassing Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lincoln, Nye and White Pine counties, along with a portion of Clark County.

Melcher, 59, said he and his wife want to move back to their hometown of Reno, which falls outside the district. Both are retired Elko County School District employees.

He touted the job as a "rewarding position where you get to effect change," noting that Nevada's colleges and universities are beginning to recover from the recession that slashed funding in the late 2000s.

Regent Chairman Rick Trachok praised Melcher for his service, noting that his "rural Nevada perspective is invaluable for the board."

Regents are limited to two six-year terms. Candidates can file for the open seat beginning March 7.
