Police: Detective called to help pair stole from them
An 86-year-old man turned to Las Vegas police for help in July, only to suspect months later that the detective who was supposed to be helping him was stealing from him.
Metropolitan Police Department Detective Eric Washington was arrested Thursday and accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the man and his 62-year-old daughter.
Washington faces multiple felony charges, including burglary with intent to commit a felony, fraudulent use of an ATM card and theft, police said. "He's got a serious problem, let's make no mistake about it," said Las Vegas police Investigative Services Deputy Chief Ted Moody.
Washington encountered the victims, whose names were withheld by police, when they requested the department's help while refinancing a home loan. They were having a difficult time and called police for help in figuring out the details, Moody said. "Unfortunately, that assistance came in the form of Detective Washington, who after several weeks decided to evidently take advantage," Moody said.
Washington worked the case, his first as a detective, alone, Moody added.
The victim's bank contacted police on Monday, after the man reported suspicious activity on his accounts that began Dec. 13. The man told the bank he thought the detective he had been communicating with was responsible for the missing money, Moody said.
The investigation is not complete, but police estimate at least $2,000 was stolen after Washington gained access to the man's ATM card and bank account, Moody said.
Investigators will review financial records and contact people involved with cases Washington has worked since becoming a detective in July. The evidence does not suggest more victims, Moody said.
Washington came to the department in June 1995. He has been placed on leave without pay pending the investigation.
