Police identify LV man shot at city traffic stop

A man who was fatally shot last week at a traffic light near the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Sahara Avenue has been identified as 31-year-old Gerald Hirai of Las Vegas.

Hirai was shot Saturday night while he was in a BMW sedan. He managed to pull into a convenience store before being rushed to the hospital, police said.

The Clark County Coroner's Office said he died Sunday, but Las Vegas police Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said he was pulled from life support Monday. The coroner's office said Hirai died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Roberts said Hirai was an intended target in the slaying.

He added there was moderate traffic flow during the time of the shooting.

Police had not made any arrests in the slaying as of Thursday morning. Roberts said witnesses saw a pickup flee the scene. Two Hispanic men may have been passengers.

Witnesses had conflicting stories of the model and color of the pickup, Roberts said. Residents at Hirai's last known Las Vegas address said he no longer lived there Thursday.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the Homicide Section at 828-3521.
