Regents OK 5% tuition hikes for colleges, universities

Tuition will go up and pay cuts will be implemented under a plan approved today by the Nevada higher education system's Board of Regents.

Tuition will rise by 5 percent for each of the next two years in the system's colleges and universities in addition to a 5 percent increase that was already coming.

Also, most system employees will be forced to take furloughs that equal about a 4 percent pay cut. Tenured faculty will not be subject to furloughs.

The board's action was taken to deal with state budget cuts of 12 percent systemwide.
