Review-Journal photojournalist Yurkanin captures regional Emmy

Las Vegas Review-Journal multimedia producer Justin Yurkanin won a regional Emmy award Saturday night for his video work on the investigative series "Deadly Force: When Las Vegas Police Shoot, and Kill."

The award was presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter during ceremonies in Carlsbad, Calif.

Since he joined the paper in December 2008, Yurkanin has won a number of awards including being named the Nevada Press Association's first ever outstanding visual journalist and a Best of the West award for multimedia storytelling for his video "Badwater Ultramarathon," along with Michael Quine and Nate Tannenbaum.

Yurkanin, 31, is a graduate of Syracuse University and had worked at the Daytona Beach News-Journal and the St. Augustine Record in Florida.

His Emmy is the latest honor for the investigative series on police shootings in the Las Vegas Valley

The series received a second place for Public Service in the National Headliner Awards, one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic excellence. The award specifically recognizes reporters Lawrence Mower, Alan Maimon and Brian Haynes.

The Review-Journal series also was named as a finalist in two categories in the national Investigative Reporters & Editors contest: investigative reporting and multiplatform investigations using print, video and Internet in presentation.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada has chosen the Las Vegas Review-Journal as its latest Emilie Wanderer Civil Libertarian of the Year award winner for the series.

In the regional Emmy competition, Review-Journal photographer John Locher was nominated in the environment category for his work on wild horses in "Unbridled Passions, Untamed Costs."
